Shocking statistics have been revealed by a clinic at one of Eldoret's top university on the level of Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs) at the institution.
The University which is the leading institution of higher learning in Uasin Gishu county has a very high population putting the students at risk of contracting the diseases.
The doctor who operates at the clinic revealed that in a week, they receive an average of about 50 students who go to seek medical treatment on various STDs.
"It has become a common thing in this university. It is now normal for a student to walk in and get treated of the STDs. On a week we may receive up to 50 students who come to get treated," the doctor who sought anonymity said.
The leading disease which has most patients is Gonorrhea. The disease which is characterized by discharge of pus and pain during urination receives a total of about 30 patients in a week. The doctor reveals that during one week he received up to 40 students who came to seek treatment for the disease.
"At one point the level became so alarming to the extent that we received up to 40 patients for gonorrhoea," he said.
Once in a while, the clinic gets patients suffering from Syphilis which is the most dangerous of all the Sexually Transmitted Diseases.
Despite the fact that the high number is good for the clinic's business, the doctor who is also a parent had a piece of advice for the students; "I am a father and a grandfather too. So as a doctor and a parent, I would like to advise the students to use protection during sex. This is extremely dangerous and if the students don't take care, most of them may die of STDs which will be a big shame to their families," he advised.
Recently the university supplied condoms to the students' hostels in an effort to encourage them to use protection during sex.
