Former cabinet secretary for Education Fred Matiang'i last year implemented the new textbook policy that actually cost the government sh7.6 billion to purchase new textbooks.
Textbooks some school heads were accused of failing to buy even after capitation was sent for the purchase of the books.
However, it has emerged that the new textbooks contain errors that have even forced teachers to resort to using books from other publishers.
The errors are said to be on various topics contained in the core subjects namely English, Maths, Kiswahili, Biology, and Physics.
Some of the detected errors include a mixture-up of the content ideas, spelling mistakes and poor arrangement of topics.
Errors that are described by teachers as confusing to learners and that compromises teaching in schools.
But who is actually responsible for the errors or what caused the errors in this project that caused the government billions of Kenyan taxpayer's money?
Firstly, it has come out that the errors could have been as a result of dubious dealings by some publishers.Influence by publishers during the approval process of this textbooks might have flawed the whole vetting process.
This could have led to approval of below standard textbooks as a result of poor quality control during the vetting process.
Furthermore, it has emerged that some publishers could have revised the books in order to reduce the number of pages hence reducing the contents of the books.
Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development(KICD) is also seen as another problem in the whole issue.
Errors could have resulted due to lack of fresh evaluation of the books which have been in supply since 2005.
According to KICD chief executive officer, Dr. Julius Jwan, cheapest books were only picked on the basis of revised prices.
This alongside poor quality control during vetting process by KICD could have resulted in the errors.
