The family of Stephen Musundi, a Mt. Kenya University (MKU) student have been meeting in the family's Langas estate residence in Eldoret since his mysterious death in Kakamega over the weekend.
According to Charity Wanjiku, the deceased sister-in-law, Musundi's burial will take place on Thursday in Esumenya village in Kakamega county.
27-year-old Musundi, a basketball player, was pronounced dead on arrival after he was rushed to hospital after he fell down during a basketball match. MKU students were playing against Nebula Club on the Kakamega police canteen court.
"I and the Kenya Basketball Federation(KBF) send our heartfelt condolences to the family, friends and the Mount Kenya University community following the loss of Musundi whose future has been cut short by the tragic death," said Mr. Paul Otula, KBF chairman.
Musundi, who was not ill at the time of his sudden death received an inbound pass from his teammate. However, without making any contact with another player, he fell on to the ground.
Efforts to save his life after he was rushed to the nearby hospital were not successful as the budding player was pronounced dead just after his arrival at the health facility.
After his death, Mr. Otula said that such incidents can be avoided if clubs took the health of players seriously. He then promised that such incidents will never occur again.
"As a federation, we want to ensure such incidents are not repeated and will be very vigilant in ensuring this is fully implemented," said Mr. Otula.
