Area OCPD Aron Moriase who confirmed the incident said that a close relative of the girl recorded a statement at Garissa Police Station on Monday.

Mr. Moriase said they have launched investigations into the incident as cases of rape and defilement in North Eastern continue to rise.

Mr. Moriase said after the matter was reported at the police station, the victim was taken to Garissa Referral Hospital for examination and treatment.

According to the police boss, the hunt for the perpetrator who committed the heinous act was underway adding that he was optimistic that they will soon arrest him because he is well known to the victim’s family.

“The matter was reported to the police and the case is under police investigation. We understand that the culprit is a neighbour of the child's family. The suspect will soon be arrested since he is known to the victim's family,” said Mr. Moriase as quoted by Daily Nation.

The incident comes barely a week after a 10-year-old girl in Tarbaj Sub-County in Wajir County was defiled by a secondary school student.

In February this year, three men gang-raped a 15-year-old girl for two days in Habaswein Sub County in Wajir.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i visited Wajir County on Tuesday, last week, and warned North Eastern chiefs and leaders who fail to take action against rapists.

Mr. Matiang’i said leaders, chiefs and their assistants who use ‘primitive’ community resolution to deal with rape cases will be sacked and arrested.

Communities in the region use the maslaha system to resolve various disputes, including cases of rape and defilement, where perpetrators only pay fines.
