Following confrontations with anti-riot police, a six-month-old baby has been left in critical condition at Aga Khan Hospital Kisumu.
According to reports, the baby sustained serious head injuries after a police officer struck her with a club on Friday night at Kilo area in Nyalenda estate.
According to Hospital superintendent Dr Sam Oula, the infant suffered internal bleeding due to high pressure built in the head.
“She was brought at the facility between 4 am and 5 am (on Saturday morning). So far there is no change as she sustained severe head injuries. We are hoping things turn around. We are on treatment, it is a day at time," he said as reported by The Star.
The baby's mother, Lenser Achieng, said police raided the house at 2 am after lobbing tear gas canisters on Saturday.
“My husband was forced to open the door as we were being chocked by the teargas,” the 29-year-old said.
Achieng explained how her and her husband Joseph Abanja were dragged out of the house and beaten by police, leaving her with limb and abdominal injuries.
"When I fell down, one of the officers hit the baby on the head with a club. She became unconscious and we thought she was dead," the mother said.
“We desperately visited a number of hospitals around but all were closed then we took her to Aga Khan,” Achieng said.
The family of the infant is seeking assistance from good samaritans to help with the hospitals bills.
“I went through a lot to have this baby. I have had two miscarriages before. I am worried about the status of my baby and I do hope God will see us through,” Achieng said.
