Uasin Gishu county commissioner Abdi Hassan has accused street children in Eldoret town of aiding trafficking and sale of drugs.

Hassan on Wednesday that most drugs supplied by the street kids are packaged like tea adding that the packaging makes it difficult to know what is being sold. 

He also said some drugs are stuffed in thermos flasks.

The county commissioner noted that areas around river Sosiani are being used as drug hiding zones by members of the street families.

He made the remarks barely a week after police conducted an impromptu crackdown along river Sosiani that led to the arrest of over 82 suspected criminals.

Eldoret West OCPD Samuel Mutunga who led the operation said the arrests were made in a bid to ensure criminal activities are brought to an end in Eldoret.

"We conducted this operation following complaints from users of the bridge and we are glad that culprits have been apprehended," Mutunga said.

"We will keep changing the mode of our operation on a weekly basis so that we ensure all those involved are arrested and prosecuted," he added.

Eldoret town is among Kenya's towns with the highest number of street children. Efforts to flash them out by the county government have not yielded fruits.
