Shoplifting allegedly costs businesses billions countrywide and locally, the trend is picking in supermarkets countrywide.
Three women have been arrested after they were found having stolen clothes and utensils worth Sh70,000 from Maathai Supermarket in Thika.
The three, who admitted to have stolen on Wednesday this week, were arrested after they returned to steal some more items. One of them was allegedly being trailed by security personnel using security cameras.
Thika OCPD Shadrack Maithya confirmed the incident and said that he was alerted by the manager at the supermarket Dr Patrick Mwangi. Maithya consequently sent his officers who made the arrest.
He added that the women have admitted to having stolen earlier and explained where they sold the items at a cheaper price. They were purportedly given a better deal if they brought more items.
“They have admitted to having stolen the items and sold them to one Mwangi wa Wholesale. They were coming for more as they were promised better money if they took other items,” Maithya said.
The police are now probing the matter and Maithya said that the suspects will be arraigned in court immediately they are through with investigations.
The two are being held at the Thika police station awaiting their court date.
