Shops operating outside schools and universities in Thika sub-county will be inspected to make sure they don’t sell alcohol and drugs to the students, security agents have said.

Speaking during a security baraza at the Thika stadium on Wednesday, Thika West Deputy County Commissioner Tom Anjere and other heads of security present noted that there was an increase in cases of drug trafficking and selling of illicit brews in the area. 

Anjere said that most of the businesses were being carried out in the shops that are located near schools and that some students have devised techniques that they use in order to purchase some of the drugs and the brews.

“We will not stop until we are sure what happens in those shops and arrest all those selling alcohol to our students,” said Anjere. 

He said that some cunning students buy chang’aa and other types of alcohol and hide them in soft drink bottles and sneak the same into schools. 

Thika West Administration Police Commander Samuel Ombonya said that for the fight against alcohol and drugs abuse in schools to succeed members of the public have to give information about the peddlers to the police. 

“We need intelligence ready community policing since most of the information is with the public,” said Ombonya. 

Ombonya said that with this kind of intelligence the police will not have to carry out patrols which is expensive as they will be going straight where the criminals are. 

Members of the Community policing were advised to give their names and telephone numbers to the areas OCPD for ease of communication.
