[Photo|Twitter]A showdown looms between MPs aligned to the Jubilee Party, and their NASA opponents, over proposal to introduce electoral amendments to curtail judicial powers, besides 'caging' the Supreme Court. This is after the Court nullified Jubilee Party leader, President Uhuru Kenyatta's re-election in the August 8 elections, after NASA filed petition. On Tuesday September 26, Jubilee MPs at the National Assembly, who are the Majority, will introduce amendments where an election will be nullified if a petitioner is able to prove the conduct of the election in question substantially violated the principles laid down in the Constitution and other written law. "When the amendments are passed, the Supreme Court will be caged. Once we do that, the Supreme Court has no choice. They cannot go pluck imaginations of their own. They would have to follow the law," said Senate Majority Leader, Elgeyo Marakwet Senator Kipchumba Murkomen.Citing the September 1, Supreme Court nullification, Murkomen indicated, an election would only be nullified if found with irregularities or illegalities that affected the final result, in the amendments.Gatundu South MP Moses Kuria, had also said a similar thing, saying the Supreme Court worked with the Opposition to subvert Jubilee Party's win.According to him, Supreme Court exceeded its powers, and that Jubilee MPs would do something about it.However, NASA lawmakers are opposed to this, saying such moves are meant to interfere with the independent of Judiciary.
