Leaders and Kenyans on social media were full of praises after Kenya rugby sevens team, Shujaa, trounced Fiji 30-7, on Sunday in Singapore sevens to win the eighth round of the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series, a historic cup title.
President Uhuru Kenyatta congratulated the team for the historic win. In his congratulatory message on twitter, the President wrote; “a brilliant, confident and powerful effort has earned Team Kenya a richly deserved victory.”
His deputy, William Ruto, in his message tweeted, “Hongera Kenya sevens for making history by winning their first ever World Series Cup title at the 2016 Singapore Sevens.”
Cord leader, Raila Odinga on his part hailed the team by posting; “Outstanding performance by Kenya sevens, Flying the Kenyan flag high and proud.”
“This is Kenya's victory and all the kenyans should join in the celebration irrespective of their tribes” added Muga Ezra.
The thread of praises dominated the front pages of Monday's local dailies.
Oscar Ayodi, Sammy Oliech and Collins Injera's two tries gave Kenya a 20-0 lead at the break before further tries from Frank Wanyama and Nelson Oyoo in between Tuwai's converted try for Fiji gave Ayimba's charges the result.
The win now places Kenya seventh in the world series standings, while Fiji remains on top with 147 points followed by South Africa with 139 points.
