Siaya is among the four Counties in Luo Nyanza with the other three being; Kisumu, Migori and Homa Bay.
Residents of these counties are still entrenched in traditions and beliefs, making them not entrust women with leadership positions.
Despite these traditions, one woman went against the wave in Siaya, and created a record for being the only elected Member of County Assembly (MCA) in 2013.
Lorna Adida was elected North Sakwa MCA in 2013, and became the only woman to be elected in that position out of the 30 MCAs in the County.
Adida retained her seat in last year’s general election, but this time round, she was not the only female elected MCA.
Three others were elected to join her in the assembly.

Judith Anyango Oyugi – Asembo East
Abigael Perpetua Awino – Central Gem
The MCA seat was introduced following the promulgation of the new constitution in August 2010. Before then, the lowest leadership position in the Country was the Councilor’s seat.
