Farmers at the cash-stricken Mumias Sugar Company have something to smile about after President Uhuru Kenyatta oiled the company's financial muscles.
The president on Saturday gave out Sh500 million to go directly towards paying debts the company owes sugarcane farmers.
"I promised to give Sh500 million to the sugar miller to pay farmers and I have honoured that promise today," he said while addressing supporters at the Bomani Grounds in Mumias.
"The money will be paid directly to the farmers and not through middlemen. The Government has so far pumped Sh3.7 billion into the company in a bid to revive it," Kenyatta said.
He further promised to bring more should he be re-elected, saying that it was his desire to see the factory back to its feet.
