Challenges facing Nyamira County government are likely to persist following the official launch of collecting signatures on Monday.
The exercise by a group of youths allied to Senator Mong’are Bwokong’o is mounting pressure on the county government over corruption allegations.
Mounting pressure from the public follows a series of corruption-related scandals and the bribery claims levelled against county assembly members.
Speaking during the official launching of signature collection at Dados Hotel in Kisii, a youth group official, Kenneth Sese, said the youths want to oust Governor John Nyagarama over several counts of mismanagement of county affairs with corruption topping the list.
“We have a cause to fulfil and nothing is going to stop us. The county government is full of shortcomings that the leadership isn’t willing to fix. There is no public participation and we are ready to fight to the end. Ultimately, we want new leadership,” Sese said.
According to them, the exercise is expected to take at least a month in a bid to reach all the areas in the county as a way of ensuring residents make a unanimous decision.
“The leadership isn’t challenged by just a small region. We will traverse all regions to ensure the governor gets to know that even at his backyard people are not happy about the rampant corruption in the county,” he added.
The county government has been in the headlines recently following a report by the Auditor General that revealed massive corruption in the county.
