A coalition agreement signed by the National Super Alliance (NASA) pentagon members bars presidential candidate Raila Odinga from running for the top seat again in 2022. But those who know the ODM leader well say this is not likely to happen. One recent sign that Mr Odinga’s untamed ambitions will override the agreement he made with Wiper’s Kalonzo Musyoka, ANC’s Musalia Mudavadi, Ford Kenya’s Moses Wetangula and CCM’s Isaac Ruto happened last week in Kisumu. On Thursday, about 50 ODM supporters in Kisumu staged protests at Awouri House, demanding that NASA principals give Raila two terms should he win the August 8 general election. The youths wore T-shirts labelled “10 Million Strong, Raila Miaka Kumi”. It goes without saying that the young ODM supporters were sponsored by high-placed party officials to deliver the message. Expect worse in case Raila wins. It won’t be surprising if he falls out with all the other NASA principals, as a move to run for a second term in 2022. The agreement signed by all parties making NASA allow Raila, the coalition’s flag bear in this election, to serve for only one term. That deal has been deposited at the Registrar of Political Parties. When Wiper boss Kalonzo Musyoka agreed to be Raila’s running mate ahead of the 2013 elections, there was a signed deal that the ODM leader would back the former vice president’s bid for the top job this year. But Raila disowned that pact. As the saying goes, “power corrupts; absolute power corrupts absolutely”. Raila’s true colors may be revealed if he manages to overcome huge obstacles to win.
