Elephantiasis is a common term used to refer to lymphatic filariasis, a tropical disease caused by parasitic worms known as filarial worms which are transmitted by mosquitoes.Since mosquitoes are common insects in the human environment, chances of contracting this disease remain high.Elephantiasis is commonly evident in the swellings of the legs, making them look like those of elephants. Scientific research has revealed that the swelling is caused by the accumulation of fluids in the lymphatic system when the filarial worms clog in the lymphatic vessels. The affected part of the body tends to be dark and dry.Although many people believe swelling of the legs or arms to be the only sign of this illness, elephantiasis can also affect the human private parts. Some patients have noted the swelling of the scrotum leading to painful sex.Unknown to many, this illness weakens one’s immune system making the patient susceptible to other different infections.Patients who suffer from elephantiasis are usually diagnosed with persistent fever and chills.Lymphatic filariasis also leads to swelling of other body parts such as breasts, testicles, liver, spleen, and arms. The World Health Organisation (WHO) recommends mass deworming through treating entire groups of people who are at risk with a single annual dose of medicine known as Albendazole and Ivermectin.
