Sigona Ward residents have been urged to venture into tree planting to boost the environment in the area which is reported to be in a poor state.
According to area MCA Njenga Mutonya who was speaking in his ward on Tuesday, the area has been experiencing poor weather conditions due to lack of rainfall.
He said, “Drought cases have been forecasted and if nothing is done now, the future generation is at risk. Kenya will lose its productivity due to lack of rainfall.”
The MCA expressed his concerns with deforestation in the area and urged residents to reports those involved in the heinous act to the area police.
He urged residents to plant more trees and shun cutting them for charcoal purposes saying their children and the future generations will pay for the mistakes they are breeding today.
Mutonya said they will be vigilant and those found cutting trees and burning charcoal will be arrested.
He further called on youths to venture into farming and minimise drugs and substance abuse insisting that an idle mind is the devil’s workshop.
The MCA said that cases of brewing illicit liquor in Kiambu were on the rise due to youths who cut trees and use it for charcoal in brewing the alcohol.
He revealed that he will ensure tree planting and nurturing is achieved in the ward bearing in mind the tree business is booming in Kenya.
“People want to buy trees and the demand is very high. Youth should start tree nurseries and make sure they don’t sell all but plant some in their homesteads,” said Mutonya.
