The winner of Jubilee Party primaries for the Kamukunji parliamentary seat Simon Mbugua has stepped down for incumbent MP Yusuf Hassan.
Mbugua had been declared the winner but Hassan petitioned saying there were irregularities.
Speaking at Jubilee Party headquarters in Nairobi on Thursday, Mbugua said he will support Hassan ahead of the August 8 elections.
Mbugua said he decided to stop any further litigation at the Jubilee Party Appeals Tribunal after consultations with the party leadership at the highest level and as a gesture of goodwill.
He urged his supporters to support Hassan adding that their support for President Uhuru Kenyatta is critical to the party.
“Of course my thousands of supporters will be extremely disappointed to hear this decision but I want to say thank you to them and request them to see the bigger picture,” Mbugua said as quoted by Capital FM.
The former director of the NGO Coordination Board said communities perceived as minorities in Kenya should also be given an opportunity to lead.
He in return asked Hassan’s supporters to vote for the party leader Uhuru Kenyatta.
