Lilian King, the Proprietor of Adopt A loo, an initiative that clean toilets in public primary schools said that lack of water in primary schools had been the major challenge in maintaining sanitation.

“It takes about Sh2 million to sink a borehole in schools but that would in turn solve the water crisis in the county,” said King.

King noted that most children in the area are forced to carry water from their homes.

They use the water to drink as well as washing their hands after visiting the toilets.

“Children can not carry more than one litre of water when going to school hence not enough for them,” says King.

She further adds that most of the time the water is contaminated thus not good for drinking.

Esther Magere, a child welfare officer, pointed out that majority of the children were at risk of contracting cholera due to the poor quality of water.

“Majority of the schools were disconnected from water supply due to unpaid bills and have to rely on rain water which is often not of good quality and unreliable,” notes Magere.

Magere urged the county government to invest in water projects since water is life.
