Nyamira based's Sironga Girls will be going for top National crown in science congress after emerging top in county competitions, Deputy Principal Guantai Harun has said.
The academic heavy weights from South Nyanza region managed to have five items in Chemistry, physics, mathematics and computer science qualifying for regional competitions to be held in Kisii School later on this month.
Guantai told the reporter on Sunday that the institution focuses on lifting national crowns following ‘concrete’ innovative ideas that his team is working on.
“I am really impressed with our performance in science and innovation at school level. Our team presented concrete innovative items which topped almost in every category,” Guantai said.
“I believe these items will win in national level and as a school, we are keen to support our children so that they lift the name of the county high,” he added.
Guantai also said the institution will use the science symposium results to popularise mathematics and science subjects in the larger Gusii region.
“Our school has been doing pretty well in mathematics and science subjects for many years now. I believe a national victory in the science congress will enable us to coordinate many more symposiums to local schools so that we boost the popularity of these subjects among candidates,” he added.
According to him, the institution’s science and mathematics department will soon launch inter-county competitions that will seek to unite schools from South Nyanza as part of the plan to popularize the subjects.
“We are also in touch with other schools in South Nyanza with an aim of introducing competitions among ourselves so that we strengthen performances of these subjects in national exams. We need to have more students joining science related courses in universities and as Sironga Girls, we are ready to lead by example by showing our ability at the national level,” he said.
Sironga topped in Nyamira County science congress and managed to beat their archrivals Nyambaria High School.
