Road contractors in Nyamira County risks having their contracts revoked and subsequently blacklisted from the county’s Transport department if they fail to carry out satisfactory work across the county, a senior official has said.

Speaking on Tuesday during an impromptu inspection of Mosobeti-Esani road, Roads committee chairman in the county assembly Ben Sironga warned contractors of failing to adhere to prescribed standards.

He said many residents had raised issues over shoddy repairs of roads across the county, which he said will make the county lose millions due to repetitive maintenance attributed to poor renovations.

“We have received complaints from residents regarding roads that are repaired using tax payers money and they end up fading in a few weeks’ time due to substandard renovations. The contractors are now on notice and the county assembly committee will blacklist some of the companies responsible,” he said.

Sironga said the county assembly is determined to ensure shoddy contractors are not paid until they meet standards acceptable by both the executive and the county assembly.

“We are the people’s representatives in the county and therefore, contractors who do shoddy jobs should forget about their dues," the MCA said.

"We want high-quality work because, at the end of the day, residents will blame MCAs in case any shoddy job is done. We want to avoid situations where contractors only pour the murram,” he added.

The outspoken Rigoma MCA said that two contractors have already been blacklisted by the committee and the details will be made public when the committee sits on Monday, November 3.
