Fish farmers in Sironga location in Nyamira South Sub-County are now counting losses following the invasion of fish-eating birds that have raided their pond.

According to some of the farmers who own ponds in the area, birds have become a real menace as they have been feeding on fish from the ponds.

Denis Momanyi who has there ponds said they were encouraged by the county government to start fish rearing and they are really having a hard time to chase birds away saying they are looking forward to a lasting solution.

“We thought it would be an easy process little did we know that we would face such challenges and we are now looking for experts to give us the way forward,” he added.

He appealed to the fisheries department to offer technical assistance on how to deal with the small white birds with long sharp beaks to enhance fish farming in the region.

Catherine Nyatichi an agricultural officer in Nyamira south Sub-County said they were initially not experiencing such bird’s since fish rearing was not done and they are looking for a quick solution for the same.

“We have promised the farmers that in few days time we will be able to give them a lasting solution to the problem,” she added.
