Six people are receiving treatment at Kisii Teaching and Referral hospital after they were injured on Friday in Kisii when anti-riot police officers moved to calm down rioting college students. Among the seven patients is a police officer and four Gusii Institute of Technology (GIT) students who were injured in the fracas, said Dr Enock Ondari, the hospital's medical superintendent on Saturday morning. Dr Ondari said that the police officer has been discharged and the rest of the patients are still receiving treatment. The law enforcement officer had head injuries while the other patients sustained bullet injuries, except one who was knocked down by a vehicle when he was running, According to the hospital's chief officer. “We received seven patients from the incident who are undergoing treatment. However, the police officer was discharged on Friday evening after treatment because he had minor injuries,” said Dr Ondari. “Others, who are four students of GIT, a tout and a civilian are still in the hospital receiving treatment, but they are in stable condition.” GIT students went on rampage on Thursday evening after a grisly accident that took place next to their college gate causing two deaths of their colleagues. One of the deceased was a subordinate staff while the other one was a student taking secretarial studies at the institution. The accident is said to have been caused by a traffic police officer who impounded a lorry at Kegati with an offence of overloading and was driving it towards Kisii police station before it lost control and crushed into the left side of the road near the college gate, killing the two pedestrians. The lorry, headed to Kisii from Keroka, was carrying electricity poles. The battle ensued on Thursday evening between the police officers and GIT students when they arrived at the scene of the accident to collect the bodies, but did not manage after they were overwhelmed by the students. They collected the bodies on Friday morning after a contingent of GSU officers arrived to contain the situation.
