Police in Kisumu have arrested six people in connection with Mondays’ anti-IEBC demonstrations that turned violent.

Three police officers were injured during the day-long demonstrations which brought business in the City to a halt.

Police lobbed tear gas canisters to scatter the youths who turned up in their numbers turned up and pelted stones at the officers and blockaded major roads at the Lake Side City.

Kisumu County Police Commander Titus Yoma said injured officers were treated and discharged adding that the suspects shall be arraigned in court and charged with participating in unlawful protests.

He termed the showdown by National Supper Alliance (NASA) supporters as illegal since the organizers did not notify the local police about their intention to stage a demonstration as required by law.

He added that security has been stepped up across the county as NASA plans to stage a similar protest march on Friday this week.

Speaking in his office, Yoma guaranteed the business community that sufficient security shall be deployed to prevent looting and ensure that their businesses are uninterrupted.

He asked anybody planning to stage demo in the area to notify the police so that security is provided.

NASA leaders from the area lead by Kisumu Senator Fred Outa, Kisumu Women Representative Rosa Buyu and Kisumu Central Member of Parliament Fred Ouda who took part in the protests have declared to continue every Monday and Friday to push for the ouster of IEBC Chief Executive Officer Ezra Chiloba alongside other officials.

The police boss asked area residents to stay out of the harm’s way promising to deal firmly with those out to create disturbance in the name of protests.
