The accident occurred near the Rift Valley Institute of Technology farm this morning.

Eye witnesses said the accident occurred after a speeding van hit a cow that was crossing the road before another vehicle hit another cow. The two animals died on the spot while several occupants in the vehicles that were badly damaged were severely injured.

The sources said other vehicles on either sides of the road collided as drivers struggled to avoid the accident.

Aineah Mwangi a bodaboda operator at the institute’s gate said the 8am accident caused a heavy traffic jam along the busy road. Those heavily affected were workers at Egerton University.

He said the cattle were grazing beside the road when they started crossing the road unnoticed by the herder.

“The vehicles were being driven at high speed. The first one dodged the cow but the second one hit it. The second cow was also hit by a fast moving matatu. Thank God no one died,” he said.

The eyewitness added that among those injured in the accident were lecturers at Egerton University whose cars were damaged and were taken to the university’s health centre in Njoro while the other victims were taken to Nakuru General Hospital.

Traffic police later arrived at the scene and recorded statements while helping control traffic. Nakuru Traffic Police Commandant Mary Omari said the cattle owner would be held responsible for the accident.
