Nakuru town has been marked for elevation into a city.
Governor Lee Kinyanjui has trained his guns on this elevation as he hopes to ride on the transformation into a second term in office.
As such, the county boss is gearing towards major projects that will give Nakuru, known for its nightlife, a new face to match Nairobi, Kisumu and Mombasa cities.
Here are some of the major projects Kinyanjui is banking on:
1. An Airport
The county leadership has been in talks with several other governmental agencies to ensure Nakuru gets an airport. Kinyanjui is using the flower farming in the county which needs a faster means of transport to push for the construction of an airport.
Sources privy to these developments said advanced efforts have been made and it will be set up in Lanet.
2. Better housing
There are talks to upgrade county houses in Lake View, Kivumbini among others.
This will also be in line with President Uhuru Kenyatta’s agenda of affordable housing.
3. Itare Dam
The multi-billion Itare Dam project in Kuresoi is meant to supply Nakuru and its environs with clean domestic use. This will be a major necessity for a city.
4. Garbage recycling at Gioto
Waste management is a major concern for any city. Nakuru has been dumping its waste at the infamous Gioto dumpsite along the Nakuru-Karbarnet road.
To solve the issue of garbage, Kinyanjui has roped in investors who will set up a recycling factory at the dumpsite.
5. An industrial park
The national government has made advanced steps to set up and industrial park in Naivasha.
This means that cargo from Mombasa will be offloaded at the park in Naivasha hence opening Nakuru to more opportunities.
6. Sh 1bn Mall
The Kenya Women Holding has laid plans to put up Sh1 billion Mall in Nakuru town.
This ambitious plan will see Nakuru town get the first major mall. This will open up business spaces, create job opportunities and give Nakuru a new face.
