Health officials in Tana River County are on high alert after six new cholera cases were reported, bringing to 90 the number of those infected.
The county director for Health Oscar Endekwa said six more people have tested positive for cholera and they are currently receiving treatment.
Mr. Endekwa said the new cases were reported to have emerged from a wedding ceremony in Bura.
The health director urged members of the public to stop eating in areas where cases of cholera have been reported and to continue observing high standards of hygiene.
“We suspect there must have been a carrier at the wedding who caused all this and all we are appealing to the people to stop feeding in such places until we are done dealing with this situation,” said Mr. Endekwa as quoted by the Daily Nation.
Last month, three people died following new cases of cholera being reported in the county while 155 others have been detected with cholera-related symptoms in six villages in Tana North Sub County in the last three weeks.
The health officials have however assured the public that the county department of Health has put up measures on how to contain the spread of the disease.
The health department also urged the residents to observe high standards of hygiene and to ensure they eat properly cooked food.
