Nyali legislator Mohamed Ali has revealed that six police officers protected him during campaigns for the August 8, 2017 general election.
Testifying in a court on Wednesday, Ali said he had applied for protection from Mombasa County police boss after getting confidential reports that his life was in danger due to politics.
"I was allowed six security officers by the government during the campaign period. Two were permanently attached to me until the polls were over," the MP said.
Ali made the remarks when petitioner's lawyer Mohamed Balala was cross-examining him in a Mombasa court.
He further revealed he had applied for protection on April 21, 2017, even before the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party nominations.
Ali was fighting off claims that State machinery was used to help him secure his win.
After he lost in ODM primaries, the first-time MP vied as an Independent candidate and emerged victorious.
However, Dan Abwao, a voter, moved to court seeking to have Ali's win overturned.
The hearing continues.
