He was first elected the Kikuyu MP in the 2013 general elections. 

In the August 8, 2017 general polls, he was the only legislator elected unopposed in the country. Ichung’wa is considered as Deputy President William Ruto’s close political ally. 

There are speculations that Mt Kenya region could front him as Ruto’s deputy in 2022. 

Here are facts you didn’t know about the Kikuyu lawmaker.

1. Birth

Ichung’wa was born and raised in Gikambura village within Kikuyu Constituency, Kiambu County.

2. Schooling

Ichung’wa schooled at Kikuyu Township Primary school and sat his Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) in 1990. He then proceeded to Alliance Boys High School-sitting for his Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) in 1994. 

3. Graduate 

The Kikuyu MP studied Economics at the University of Nairobi (UoN) and graduated in 2000. 

4. Work experience

He is a Certified Accountant. Ichung’wa worked at Madison Insurance as a senior accountant, at the Standard Group as the financial controller and at Safex Africa as the Director for Finance and Administration before joining politics in 2013.

5. Politics

He ventured into politics in 2012 and was elected the Kikuyu MP on a TNA party ticket. He was re-elected unopposed in 2017. He is the current chairman of the National Assembly’s Budget and Appropriation Committee. 

6. Family

He is a husband and a father. 

In 2016, Ichung’wa hit headlines when he sensationally claimed that a certain former governor was allegedly recruiting militia in Kiambu to scare his opponents. In a petition to Parliament, the MP also claimed that his life was in danger as leaflets warning him had been dropped at his gate. Political analysts observe that the youthful MP is among key politicians to watch in the 2022 Mt Kenya succession politics
