A section of Nairobi's Cord MCAs have been warned against skipping president Uhuru Kenyatta’s address during the official opening of the new chambers on Tuesday.
This follows intentions by Mathare North MCA Oscar Lore as well as his Makongeni counterpart Peter Imwatok to skip the sittings on grounds that their Cord coalition leader Raila Odinga had not been invited.
Issuing the warning, Nairobi Deputy Speaker Ken Ngondi said that dire consequences would accompany any such act of sabotage.
"We have mechanism of disciplining our members. We will deal with whoever will abscond. Let them not be petty because we are neither opening a Cord nor Jubilee office. We are opening the County Assembly of Nairobi," Ngondi said.
The argument by the opposition MCAs was that since Cord had majority of members in the house, their party leader was the one supposed to preside over the opening.
Cord Chief Whip David Mberia has already summoned the MCAs at a Nairobi hotel to deliberate on whether or not to honour the meeting.
The two will however suffer lack of solidarity from their fellow Cord counterparts most of whom have already confirmed attendance.
It remains unknown whether the duo will therefore heed the warning and rescind their earlier decision or whether they will proceed and defy the Deputy Speaker.
