The Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) Freight Services has managed to move over 1600 containers in January only after the official launch which was in January 2, 2018.

This statement is in accordance to the management at Kenya Railways which has stated that the services are taking a good course and that the progress is good.

“Monday’s train which left Mombasa at 6:40 hrs hauling 38 wagons (76 TEUs) arrived at the Inland Container Depot in Nairobi at 16:40 hrs,” Management said.

This comes after the railways promoted the shippers by giving them a three-month deal where they have halved its freight charges.This offer will run up to April 5, 2018 and it is meant to ensure that the shippers charge Sh25,000 to transport a 20-foot container and Sh30,000 for a 40-foot container from the Inland Container Depot to Mombasa.

KR is charging a subsidized rate of Sh35,000 to transport a 20-foot container and Sh40,000 for a 40-foot container from Mombasa to Embakasi Inland Container Depot (ICD).

The normal rates of Sh64, 500 for a 20-foot container and Sh84, 300 for the 40-foot container will come will kick start as from April.The flat charges includes cargo handling costs and returning of empty containers.
