Over 25 families in Muchanganyiko slums in Nakuru town will benefit from a 2 million housing and sanitation project being undertaken by a local Non-Governmental Organisation. Speaking during a pilot tour of the slums on Friday, Nakuru County coordinator of Muungano wa Wanavijiji Federation Mr James Mwangi said the federation will build modern residential houses and sanitation facilities to the tune of sh.2.5 million to benefit the locals. Mwangi said the project was being co-sponsored by the federation’s partner Selavip International to improve lives in the slums and will run from November 2014 to February 2015. “We identified this area as a beneficiary in our programmes through our community assessment survey and we are glad because our partners have agreed to support us,” he said. The slum has approximately 200 families who live in marginalised conditions including poor housing, sanitation, health and education with the NGO having resettled 50 of those families last year. Muungano Federation of Kenya brings together over 100,000 members drawn from 300 informal settlements in the country and is sponsored by Muungano Trust to empower marginalised communities through savings and settlement programmes. The group also advocates against forced evictions and land rights of poor people in the country.
