This emerged after the Kenya Railways Corporation wrote to the City Council of Nairobi expressing concern on the rate at which the slum dwellers are constructing temporary structures on its land.

It is only last week that the Railways Corporation issued a notice to the public urging those who had made their way towards the railway lines to demolish their structures and vacate the place. The mentioned areas include Kibera, Mukuru kwa Kayaba and Mukuru kwa Njenga.

The corporation's managing director, Atnas Maina said that slums have been served with a month to move from the areas or risk eviction and demolition.

“Barely a month from today, this notice is hereby served to all persons who have illegally encroached along the railway side to immediately vacate. Contrary to this notice, we will use force and lawful eviction for trespassing without any more reference upon the expiry of the notice,’’ read the notice.

In the recent past, there have been cases of people and structures being knocked down by trains causing unnecessary accidents. No structures are allowed 30 metres to a railway line.
