Residents of a section of slums in Nakuru have expressed concern at the number of criminal activities in the informal settlements that go unnoticed.

The residents who held a peaceful procession on Saturday to Kiamunyi Chief Office to vent their anger attributed the upsurge in crime to idle youths in the area.

Kimani wa Ngugi who spoke on behalf of the over 50 residents from London, Mercy Njeri and Kiamunyi slums lamented about an increase in cases of house break-ins saying that living in the areas had become a total misery.

“The levels of daytime crime in our area is slowly getting out of hand because our complains are not being taken seriously by relevant authorities, we deserve better security in this area,” he said.

The residents noted that attempts to have the local leadership intervened proved futile because no positive action had been undertaken.

“We have written to both the MCA and MP offices but nothing has come forth as we continue to fall victim to crime,” Wa Ngugi noted.

They pointed out a case in point where a Nyumba Kumi initiative led to the recovery of household items amongst them radios, television sets, DVD machines, gas cookers and phones from a house in London estate but the accomplices managed to escape.

“We raised the matter with our AP officers but to date no culprit has been apprehended even after we volunteered to give all the necessary leads,” he wondered.

They called for immediate action or a transfer of police officers in all stations within the area accusing them of not doing much to curb crime.

Landlords were further cautioned against entertaining tenants with questionable characters whom according to the residents were behind the criminal activities.
