A group of slum residents have organised a major fund drive to enable them raise Sh100 million to purchase land and put up more decent houses.
The slum residents drawn from Kibera, Mukuru kwa Njenga, Mathare and Fuata Nyayo slums say they have been neglected for long and it is time to wake up and work for a worthy cause.
The group of approximately 500 families have rallied together under the Arahuka Self-Help Group to convene a fundraiser which is scheduled to take place on November 19, at the Kenyatta International Conference Centre.
The group says that parents no longer have privacy, since they live in same small houses with their children.
Chairman Njihia Julius said during the group’s AGM that was recently held, they managed to raise Sh1.4 million but their target lies at Sh100 million with the objective of buying 40 acres to benefit the group members.
Njihia further said they have invited President Kenyatta, his Deputy William Ruto, governors Evans Kidero of Nairobi and William Kabogo of Kiambu, Nairobi Senator Mike Sonko and all the aspirants vying for various elective posts in Nairobi county.
