Students from Nairobi's major slums have been awarded school fees and tablets amounting to over sh3 million by the Unilever company.
The students, drawn from 46 secondary schools around the county's slum areas received cash handouts ranging between sh20, 000 to sh100, 000 courtesy of the consumer goods and manufacturing limited company in a campaign dubbed "Chuo Club". Among the forty-six students, 12 were awarded each with sh100, 000, 14 received sh50, 000 and the remaining number each pocketed sh 20,000 in cash to cater for their school fees.
Speaking at the launch of the Chuo Club event in Nairobi, David Walton, the director of Unilever Kenya Customer Development said the school programme is a life-long initiative that will benefit a number of students all year round in catering for their school fees. He further said that the program will soon be rolled out to different parts of the country before the year ends.
The Unilever Company has since partnered with the Tuskys and Nakumatt supermarkets. The students were also advised to be checking with other leading supermarkets in the country after the launch of second phase of the national edition Chuo Club campaign next month.
Most of the programme beneficiaries are students from Kibera, Majengo and Mukuru kwa Njenga slums in Nairobi.
