In the website post, Kibera was lauded as the best slum destination in Africa, owing to its friendly environment and the hospitable people residing in the area.

Though slum tourism has not been officially recognised in Kenya, Kibera area in the expansive Nairobi County is receiving more international visitors touring the area to get a taste of slum life. Although critics of the emerging slum oppose the move, the slum dwellers are earning income from the thriving business. International tourists, most of who come from America, hire tour guides from the local area and at the end of the day pay the individuals for their services.

On another positive note, humanitarian organisations have been on the rise in the area owing to foreign tourists who visit the area only to develop the interest in empowering the people. Schools like Kibera Primary School have been on the receiving end as tourists who visit the school shower them with gifts and stationery.

In the past, high-ranking officials like Barack Obama, Ban-Ki-Moon and Hillary Clinton have visited the area raising its international profile and, therefore, attracting many foreign personalities.
