President Uhuru Kenyatta has stated that the country is making significant steps to tackle the growth of urban slums.

According to Uhuru, the country needs more resources to accelerate urban renewal.

“However, we require adequate resources to accelerate urban renewal — which has already taken shape through slum upgrading programme,” he said.

Uhuru was speaking when he opened the 26th Session of the UN-Habitat Governing Council in Gigiri.

He called for a clear vision on interconnection between economic growth and environmental sustainability.

“Urban renewal is at the heart of Kenya’s economic blueprint, Vision 2030. It is high time we created smart towns that are economically viable, socially livable, environmentally resilient and politically stable,” he said.
