Drivers in Kenya will from next month get the much-anticipated smart driving licences, National Transport and Safety Authority has said.
While making the announcement, NTSA Nyanza regional manager Ezekiel Koech said the new technology is aimed at helping identify rogue drivers.
"The smart driving licences will be a game changer in the fight to reduce road carnage," he said, as quoted by The Standard on Monday.
The new digital driving licence will contain a driver's history and will also have points.
"We are at the testing stage and we are hoping that by December next year, all motorists will be having the smart driving licences," the NTSA official said.
Speaking in Kisumu, Koech revealed that the licences are embedded with a secure magnetic chip that will link vehicle number plates to the holders' information.
"The computer chip is only readable using special electronic gadgets to be owned and NTSA officials," he added.
