Speaking to locals at Garissa Town on Sunday, Maalim urged police to increase patrols and smoke out criminals wreaking havoc in the area.

The former National Assembly Deputy Speaker claimed that he been receiving complaints from a section of locals over rise in criminal activities.

“Security agencies must work around the lock and guarantee locals safety especially this electioneering period,” he said as quoted by Daily Nation on Sunday.

The MP warned that instances of crime being reported in the area and other parts of the country must be contained and Kenyans safety guaranteed ahead of the August 8 general elections.

He urged the Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinnet to deploy more security personnel to areas hit by a wave of crime and banditry attacks.

Maalim also urged security agencies to sensitize locals on existing security initiatives noting that the move will help tame crime.

Security has been a matter of concern among locals within Garissa Town and its environs in the recent days.

On Wednesday night last week, three people working at local restaurant in Garissa Town were killed by unknown assailants.

The three, a watchman and two waiters at a local restaurant within Garissa town were attacked by assailants who hit them with blunt objects killing them on the spot.

According to Garissa County Commissioner James Kianda, the motive of the attack has not yet been established but investigation into the incident is on top gear.

In a briefing with journalists on Saturday, Kianda said that police are zeroing in on suspected assailants in relation to the killings.
