Kisii social media officer and blogger, Patrick Makila has raised concerns over the abuse of the social media in fostering ethnic intolerance and hate speech.

He was speaking in Kisii saying the rate at which the youth are fostering ethnic and political intolerance in the media is alarming.

“Kenyans are taking up to the social media to wage war on each other. We may never attain national unity with what is portrayed out there. The media is rotten with every form of hate speech and tribal fights,” he said.

He has called upon the national government to intervene and crack down on those fostering hate speech and ethnic animosity.

He adds that different tribes are forming alliances in the media to foster ethnic animosity.

"The social media is a no go zone today. You will be shocked what is posted there by Kenyans.  We have completely lost track," he said

He said the nation is heading in the wrong direction if the youth expected to lead the country in the future engage in unhealthy fights on the social media.

He adds that as much as there is freedom of speech and expression it should not be abused.

“As much as we are free to share all that we have and express our thoughts we should not use it against other tribes. This is very wrong,” he said.

He adds that the social media is one of the powerful tools the government has neglected and may have adverse effects in the near future and the coming elections.
