Speaking during the planting exercise in the Park, the Society Chairperson John Mutiso stated that it was a move aimed at conserving the Park and the surrounding environment.

“The exercise is one of the many exercises aimed at retaining forestry in our Parks so that we have a good environment and maintain a good home for the wild animals in the Park,” said Mutiso.

The exercise was lead by Machakos County CeC for Tourism and Culture Faith Wathome who called upon the residents living around the Park to conserve the park.

“As residents of Oldonyo Sabuk you can preserve our Wildlife by reporting people cutting trees or burning charcoal inside the Park,” said Wathome.

Taking part in the tree planting exercise were also Oldonyo Sabuk Primary School pupils who helped in planting 1,000 tree seedlings in the Park.

This comes barely two weeks after fire whose cause has not yet been established engulfed a big session of the forest. However according to residents it is suspected that it may have been caused by illegal charcoal burning.
