A sociologist has hit out at the society at large to blame for the increased cases of school unrests which have led to the destruction of property worth millions of money.
A number of schools have been burnt down as students riot in different areas in the country forcing some to close indefinitely with the latest cases being Iterio Boys High School and Nyamache Girls High School.
Dr Chris Ogello says we have set a bad example as the society where the students have picked the traits of rioting saying we have become bad role models and failed as a society at large.
“Today when we want something as a country we hit the streets and when things seem not to work we start hitting at buildings. Protesting in terms of ‘peaceful’ demonstrations. Some of these things have soiled the minds of our children who look up to us as role models,” he said.
“We hear cases of politicians hiring goons to further their political careers. These students pick these traits and when they want to raise a concern, they start rioting where some light fires like what we have seen recently. It is common during protests we see protesters lighting tyres along the road. These students have emulated the same through what we call social learning. Picking the traits from the society,” said Ogello.
He says the only solution to the menace is towing the line as role models beginning from politicians who lead Kenyans to the streets and advocate for more peaceful ways of solving problems.
“We should change our way of handling issues in the country. We don’t have to hit the road burning tyres and throwing stones leading to destruction's,” he said.
He did not wish away guiding and counseling saying it plays an integral part in bringing up the children wholly but the society comes first as role models to the children.
