Among those confirmed dead are children.

Sources at the Kenya Red Cross on the ground said there are fears the number of casualties will rise as more people, among them children, are still missing.

A desk has been set up to make reports on missing family members.

The dam burst at around 9pm.

"We heard an explosion before we saw water coming at very high speed sweeping away everything," John Rotich said.

The dam is estimated to be of a one-acre diameter and had collected much water due to the ongoing rains.

It belongs to an Indian family in the area which uses collected water for flower irrigation.

Residents said there are 'more dams in the farm and they are leaking'.
