A farmers’ association in Solai has petitioned the Wild Life Services department in Nakuru County to provide a lasting solution that will end the problem of wild animals’ menace that is rendering them poor day by day.
According to the chairman of Solai Farmers Association, Stephen Kipkurui, the area‘s farmers count losses every year arising from Tortoises and Pythons that inadvently are a big threat to their small scale farming activities.
He added that pythons prey on goats, sheep, chicken and calves, while tortoises invade vegetable and maize farms during early stages and dry seasons.
“These animals are causing havoc to our productivity yet there has been no solution over the years from the government. We are planning to petition the government for compensation. We have invited wild life and ministry of agriculture officials during our annual general meeting on December 13 and we will demand action,’’ said Kipkurui.
Recently, a county sub-commissioner cautioned area residents against random killing of animals while also residents recently saved a goat from an attack from a python.
