The Rongai police boss Joseph Mwamburi has raised concern over the residents living near Lake Solai for refusing to move away from the area even after the lake burst its banks.
Mwamburi said that even after a notice was issued for the residents to vacate the area, most of them are yet to do so with the excuse of wanting compensation from the government.
Speaking on Monday morning at Riobei village, Mwamburi accused the residents of playing politics with their lives.
“People were told to move to higher grounds but they have refused to do so. Your lives are in danger because the floods are increasing day by day and there is a high risk of crocodiles attacking people due to the floods that have displaced them,” said Mwamburi.
“Why should you stick here with the excuse of waiting for compensation? What if you get killed by the floods before you get the little money?” he asked.
The Riobei location Chief Mark Mogotio also pleaded with the affected residents to move to higher grounds to avoid being swept away by the floods.
Lake Solai burst its banks last week after heavy rains were witnessed in Ronagi and upper Subukia regions leading to heavy flooding.
