Quick action by a section of residents of Sang’ara village in Solai sub-county saved a goat from a python’s death grip on Thursday evening. The villagers killed the deadly reptile before setting it on fire. Area sub-chief Emmanuel Tonui said about 15 young men acting on a distress call from a young herder rushed at a bush and descended on a python that had attacked a goat that was among a herd of livestock under the care of the youngster. “The python had gripped the male goat and was pressing it hard preparing to swallow it when the young men came running at the scene after another young man had raised the alarm,” Tonui said. According to the sub-chief, the villagers armed with pangas, swords and other crude weapons started attacking the reptile severely before it let go the domestic animal. He added that the villagers continued attacking the wild animal for about 45 minutes until it died. “It was not in order for them to do that but I think they were reacting to the danger the python was posing to the domestic animal and to them,” said Tonui. He said that the area is prone to invasion by pythons which stray into the village away from the nearby Menengai Crater slopes where they inhabit. Last month, Rongai sub-county commissioner David Motari had warned residents of Solai against the wanton killing of pythons and advised them to consult wildlife officials to solve the human-wild life conflict.
