A former refugee at Dadaab camp is set to make history after announcing that she will be contesting for a seat in the United States Congress. Ilhan Omar, 36, hit the headlines after she became the first woman from the Somali community to win an election in the US legislature.
Speaking after she was declared the winner, Omar said that her achievements are not only for her community and religion but also for the young girls across the world.
“My success is not only for me but for every Somali, Muslim and minority group, particularly the young girls in the Dadaab refugee camp, where I lived before coming to the US,” Ms Omar declared on the night she won her race.
Mr Mohamud Noor, a fellow Somali-American who lost a Democratic primary race, hailed Omar as one of the most loved women she has ever met.
She also said that Omar has what it takes to win any seat.
"People are proud of her because of her accomplishment, and commitment to the public service,” he said.
Omar has been a source of inspiration to many women in the entire world.
Despite going through endless challenges while living at the Dadaab camp, Omar defied all odds to rise to the top.
