Somalia's Aviation Minister Ali Ahmed made the announcement on Monday without giving any reason for the ban.

"Any violation on Somali airspace and disregard of this notice will have equal consequences," he said in a letter copied to Internal Security and the Civil Aviation Authority.

Somalia President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud however cited a devastating impact on Somalis from the trade and consumption of Miraa.

This comes barely four months after he threatened to reduce the Miraa trade before shutting it down completely.

“While considering special circumstances, Somali Civil Aviation and Meteorology Authority on behalf of the Federal Republic of Somalia is hereby informing all Miraa cargo operators and anyone it may concern that Miraa cargo flights and its operation into Somalia have been cancelled until further notice,” read part of a letter sent to Miraa Cargo Operators.

This is a big blow to the Miraa industry whose largest market happens to be Somalia, where more than 15 planes deliver the product daily, after similar bans were imposed from UK and Netherlands.
