The government of Somalia has temporarily announced that it had suspended all khat (miraa) flights from Kenya to Somalia.
Somalia Minister for Civil Aviation, Ali Ahmed Jangali told the media that the government had decided to suspend temporarily all khat imports to Somalia as from today, (Tuesday) adding that this is due to its effects to local residents and also its economical impact to the country.
The product, which is mainly imported by Somalis from Kenya is a top earner for most locals, and the latest ban comes as a big blow to Kenya, after United Kingdom banned the same sometime back.
“While considering special circumstances, Somali Civil Aviation and Meteorology Authority on behalf of the Federal Republic of Somalia is hereby informing all miraa cargo operators and any one it may concern that Mira cargo flights and its operations into Somalia have been cancelled effective September 6, 2016 until further notice” read a notice by the Somali aviation body.
