Somalia's President Farmajo did the unthinkable during the annual National Prayer breakfast that was graced by Kenyan politicians from across the political spectrum.
While greeting veteran opposition leader Raila Odinga, President Farmajo stood up perhaps as an indication of the high esteem in which holds him.
His gesture was in stark contrast to that of President Uhuru Kenyatta who remained seated.
Garissa residents reacted to the gesture.
Here is a sample of their reactions:
''Raila is not any other person, he is an enigma,'' Mohamed Kuno said.
''Somalis are respectful people. What Farmajo did was a sign of respect,'' Jasmine Galgalo said.
That was a lovely gesture,'' Kamal Ahmed said.
''I love Farmajo. He's a mature leader,'' Junet Bule said.
''Raila is a heavy-weight leader. That's why Farmajo stood,'' Khatif Rege said.
